World Junior number one Kenta Matsudaira of Japan will not win the Boys' Singles event. Matsudaira lost to the player ranked no. 46 from Iran, Noshad Alamiyan. Alamiyan’s win is probably the biggest upset in the six year history of the World Junior Championships.

The winner is a real exotic; 17 years old and from a table tennis development country, Alamiyan came to Madrid without a coach, no great knowledge of English. The only person in the Francisco Fernandez Ochoa venue that can understand him is an umpire from his country.

Serious Level in Iran
Matsudaira had two game points in the sixth game but failed to level. Alamiyan won three points in a row as Matsudaira served into the net. A table tennis tragedy for Japan on the one side; a miracle for Iran on the other.

“The level of table tennis in Iran was much lower than in other Asian countries, now it’s getting better. This match proved that an Iranian can win such matches,” Alamiyan said. After this performance, nobody will underestimate Iranian players in the future.
